Dr. Charles Robertson Crow (1876-1967) served Stewart County for many years as a physician.  One of his frequent duties was delivering babies, and he 'caught' a lot of them around the county.

Doctors carried State-issued birth registers, consisting of the birth certificate and a stub, on which was recorded most of the information on the actual birth certificate.  The certificate was turned into the courthouse for filing with the state, and the doctor kept the stubs.

1,200 of Dr. Crow's birth register stubs, spanning from 1936-1953, were donated to the Archives a few years ago.  These stubs have been transcribed are available for inquiry from the Archives.  Because birth records in Tennessee are private for 100 years, we cannot scan/post images of the birth register stubs, but the Archives accepts queries on the verification of birth facts.

The birth register stub changed format over the years, but typically includes:
  • child's name
  • date of birth
  • sex
  • legitimate birth or not
  • father's name, color, age, birthplace and occupation
  • mother's name, color, age, birthplace and occupation
  • number of other children by the mother
