The photo album of Nancy Albertine “Tinie” (Wofford) Settle (1863-1922) of Stewart County was digitized by the Stewart County Archives in August 2025. The album had been in the care of the late Charles Albert Settle (1929-2018) of Dover, a first cousin of the album’s previous caretaker, Ruby H. (Waggoner) Evans (1913-2001). Both Charles and Ruby were grandchildren of Tinie Wofford Settle. Ruby Evans gave the album to Charles Settle in 1994, as he was involved in family research and was carrying on the Settle name. Charles reproduced the photographs for sharing with other family members. Accompanying the album are the prints made by Charles, and the corresponding photo negatives.
Tinie Wofford Settle was the youngest daughter of Albert Green Wofford (1823-1902) and Nancy Lavinia Grimes (1824-1896), who married 30 January 1845 in Stewart County and lived on Lost Creek. On 27 Jan 1887, Tinie married John Alphis Settle (1860-1933), also of Stewart County, and they also raised their family on Lost Creek. On the inside cover of the album in blue ink is written “Tinie Settle’s Album.” The pages of the album are numbered in pencil in the top outside corner, and each page has a slot for sliding a photograph up into a cut-out window. The album contains 24 pages and 25 photographs, 19 of which are tintypes. The 25th photograph is not in a page, but loose within the album, presumably since all 24 pages of the album were occupied. Identifications are written on the first three pages only, beneath the photo, apparently by the hand of Tinie (Wofford) Settle. Identifications, and possible identifications, of 13 of the photographs are written on a separate sheet of paper tucked into the album, whose numbers correspond to the numbered pages of the album. This sheet is by the hand of Edgar Green Settle (1891-1981), son of Tinie (Wofford) and John A. Settle, and father of Charles Albert Settle. All photographs were removed from their album pages for digitization, but a few of the photographs were also digitized in situ to show the album’s composition. None of the photographs have writing on the reverse of the image except these two:
The album also includes a newspaper clipping of the obituary of Benjamin Franklin “Frank” Wofford (1854-1937), who is photo #3 in the album. The obituary appeared in the otherwise-lost August 27, 1937 issue of the Stewart County Times.

Armstrong – Shelton –Shrader – Ezell families
Of Trigg Co., Kentucky and Stewart Co., Tennessee Family Bible, Bible Pages and Family Dates An Armstrong-Shelton family Bible was donated in July 2025 to the Stewart County Archives by Tara Hodges Wallace of Clarksville, TN, who had received it from a cousin. Shout out to Randy Rubel for arranging the donation. The Bible includes family pages of the Armstrong and Shelton families, but also the family pages from an Ezell family Bible, as well as family notes from the Shrader family. These families lived around Roaring Springs in Trigg County and Bumpus Mills in Stewart County. The four generations represented in the Bible pages are:

The Stewart County Archives has received a wonderful donation of the minute book of Cub Creek Primitive Baptist Church, spanning the years 1805-1929.
As the church was already in existence by 1805, it becomes the first organized church in Stewart County. (McKendree Church near Cumberland City organized in 1812, at a site where religious gatherings had been taking place for about 15 years. Crockett Creek Primitive Baptist Church organized in 1809, and Saline Creek Primitive Baptist Church in 1810). The church was first located at the head of Cub Creek, in northeastern Stewart County, then moved a couple miles east to the head of Dicks Fork of North Cross Creek in the 1850s, and then in 1900 moved to its final location at Legate. It disbanded in 1948, as the creation of Fort Campbell had displaced the last remaining members. The minute book has been in the loving care of the Foster family of Greenwood, Indiana, whose ancestor Frank P. Foster was the last church clerk before moving to LaFayette, Kentucky. An entry at the back of the book indicates that it was purchased in 1812 by member George Petty for $2.75. Cub Creek Church joined the Red River Baptist Association in 1808, which divided in 1813 due to growth. Cub Creek became part of the western division, called the Little River Association. When Little River split in 1833 due to the subject of mission work, Cub Creek remained Primitive, joining what was called the Original Little River Association, of which it was a member until the 1948 disbanding. Church membership stagnated after the 1833 split, however. The minutes reflect typical church business and membership changes, but unfortunately few death dates of members. The exception to this is that the back inside cover includes the birth dates of longtime members Robert and Rebecca Dinkins, as well as their marriage date - a date not otherwise known. Frank P. Foster, the last church clerk, was married to a granddaughter of the Dinkins. Many of the church members in later years were descendants of the Dinkins, including the Bagwell, Bibb and Free families. A couple of early membership lists appear in the back of the book, revealing the names of people who might otherwise have remained unknown, particularly women and enslaved people. The pastors of Cub Creek were Josiah Horn, Thomas Ross, Francis Moore, Charles B. Wilcox, Samuel Ross, E. T. Wadkins, E. T. Ridings, W. H. Dyer, J. L. B. Darnall and J. Nuck Darnall. All 320 pages of minutes have been photographed and indexed by Archives volunteers. The images and index are accessible on the Archives' Google Drive, at https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1y7zuS6Mw9SSCGOBh8jCRt5DTipCkQMue?usp=sharing The names of about 400 people appear in the index, as well as the names of 27 churches with whom Cub Creek fellowshipped or corresponded. The minute book is available for research during Archives' regular hours. In 2020, the Civil War letters of Pvt. Silas Bailey, 24th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, were brought to the Archives to prepare them for donation by the owner to a military archive. In addition to flattening and foldering the items for protection, we made a digital copy of the letters for the owner. The letters include those received by Silas Bailey before his military service, those sent home by him during his service, and a few received by his mother after his death.
Silas Bailey was born November 3, 1844, in Johnson County, Iowa to Asa and Sophia (Kepler) Bailey. He enlisted September 28, 1862 in Company D of the 24th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, USA. His regiment was involved in skirmishes in Mississippi at Madison, Ft. Pemberton, Greenwood, Port Gibson, Bayou Pierre and Fourteen Mile Creek. He was killed at the battle of Champion's Hill on May 18, 1863, age 18, and was interred in a mass burial mound there.
The Archives holds personal documents and photographs from the estate of Orlean Brandon Walter (1886-1980) of Dover. Included are several photographs of her stepfather, Gen. William M. Brandon (1866-1908), who was Adjutant General of the Tennessee National Guard during the 1899-1903 governorship of Benton McMillin. Orlean Brandon Walter was the daughter of Morris Newton Brandon (1863-1896) of Dover and Corinne (King) Brandon of Meridian, MS. After the death of Morris Newton Brandon, Corinne married his cousin, William Milton Brandon (1866-1908) of Dover. Orlean Brandon operated a bed-and-breakfast out of her home that she called the Fort Donelson Tourist Home. A listing of the items in the collection is found on the Finding Aids page. He was the son of Jane Ralls (unmarried) and the grandson of James Ralls Jr. and Sarah (Whitehurst) Ralls. John's biological father's last name was Cooley. On the 1860 census, John is listed as "John Cooley," age 13, living with his mother and his Ralls grandparents. Family lore states that when John grew up and married Sarah Frances Akin on October 30, 1863, he took his mother's maiden name of Ralls for his family name. Shown here is a copy of the diploma that John M. T. Ralls received on graduation from Vanderbilt University's School of Medicine in 1881. Also shown is the list of the graduating class for that year. These copies were donated to the County Archives by the late Randy Wallace. The original diploma is in the care of descendant Earl Ralls Lewis.
The Jarrett O. Lewis Family Collection contains dozens of photographs and a few family documents and ephemera of a Stewart County Lewis family. Jarrett O. Lewis (1877-1954) was the son of George Rufus Lewis (1844/1920) and Martha Oneal (1844) of Stewart County.
Jarrett Oneal Lewis and Ella Esterlee Walker married in Stewart County in 1904. They had 6 children, 2 of whom survived to adulthood, Virginia (Lewis) Honeyman (1912-1958) and Jesse Lahiff Lewis (1920-1962). Esterlee Walker had a brother who lived in Miami, Florida, and some of the photos are of that Walker family. In 1957, Fannie (Hembree) Patterson, a widow with two young daughters, married Jesse Lahiff Lewis. They had no children together. After Jesse died, in 1966 Fannie married W. Cecil Richardson (1918-2000), son of Benjamin F. Richardson of Stewart Co. In 2022, the collection was donated by Jane (Smith) Bagwell of Stewart County. The collection was given to her by a ‘Lewis family member’ a number of years ago, consisting mostly of Lewis family photos – mostly unlabeled – and a few documents. Some Patterson and Richardson photos appear in the collection as well. The collection includes the family Bible of Jarrett and Esterlee Lewis, the funeral register of Jarrett O. Lewis, and the Naval training manual of their son Jesse L. Lewis. Individuals identified in the photos include: Crawford, Frank - unknown, but sent from the Presidio, San Francisco, CA Hembree, Fannie (1927-2017) – wife of Jesse L. Lewis, James W. Patterson & W. Immigrants who wished to obtain American citizenship could file a declaration in any court of record, stating their intention to become naturalized citizens. Their petitions typically included their year and place of birth, date of immigration, and residency since immigration.
A declaration of intention had to be filed first, and after 2 years' time a final petition could be filed. Thirty-two such petitions filed in Stewart Circuit Court have survived. The petitions are part of the loose records of the Circuit Court, and are viewable online on our Google Drive.
